Extracts by Neil Mawdsley
Throughout history privateers such as Francis Drake have
escorted partly wrecked prizes into Plymouth Sound. They were often laden with
great treasures.
1603
The French Prize ship Lavinia was captured and
later ran aground on Drakes Island.
1811 HMS Amethyst
Torn from her mooring in a violent storm the
Amethyst became yet another victim of the dreaded Mountbattan reef. Although
close to land all of 300 lives were lost..
Di Catherina Von Flensberg 1782
Dived on by Prince Charles in the 1980’s The
wreck is deep in an underwater canyon. The ships bell was stumbled over at the
foot of a cliff in 1974. Many hides were recovered from the wreck and sold in
the form of key fobs etc. Diver John Row gave me a slave ring from this wreck.

1691 HMS Coronation and HMS Harwich lost 900
men just outside Plymouth Sound. Admiral Russel fearing the onset of a southerly
gale on this lee shore, ran for cover in Plymouth Sound. A sudden storm arose
and many ships collided as they ran for shelter.
HMS Amphion 1796
A farewell party was well under way for the
crew and their families. The Amphion was sailing on the morning tide. Below deck
gunpowder was accidentally set alight. The ship violently exploded. More than
300 people were aboard. Only one child, the captain and 10 other people
survived.
